Press Release

For general release

The second Australian Python Conference ("PyCon") event, to be held at the Sydney Masonic Center in Sydney on 20th-21st August 2011, is expected to host over 250 Python programming enthusiasts. The weekend will feature keynotes by influential core Python developer Raymond Hettinger, long-time Python enthusiast Mary Gardiner, and PyLadies co-founder Audrey Roy.

PyCon Australia 2011 will host dozens of presentations on web programming, business applications, game development, science and mathematics, social issues, education, design, testing, documentation and more. Scheduled presentations include “How Python Evolves”, “Behaviour Driven Development”, “Benchmarking stuff made ridiculously easy”, and a discussion panel on Python 3.

This year’s conference also features a dedicated classroom track catering to beginners, with tutorial-style presentations such as “Python 101”, “Python’s Dark Corners” and “Python for Science and Engineering”.

PyCons are run by volunteer Python programmers; the users' perspective governs everything from talk selection to conference cost, making it an exceptionally worthwhile conference. Low-cost tickets are available for students. Participants themselves generate content, which can be as short as a 5 minute Lightning Talk, or as long as a 45-minute "How To" tutorial.

PyCon Australia 2011 will be a great way to meet other enthusiasts, learn new skills, share ideas and establish connections.

About Python

Python is an open-source, dynamically typed, object-oriented programming language that can be used in nearly the entire range of technology applications. It offers an easy learning curve and access to a vast array of libraries. With implementations available for all common operating systems as well as the Java and .NET platforms, Python can be used on virtually any system in existence. Some 15% of Google's code base is Python, and YouTube is almost entirely written in Python. Python's power and versatility have made it one of the world's most popular programming languages, currently ranked #7 in the TIOBE index. Like other open-source, dynamic languages, it offers rapid productivity and a vigorous developer community; at the same time, Python's clarity and reliability give confidence to enterprise users.

About PyCon

Australia's Python conference brings together a diverse group of developers, enthusiasts, and organizations to explore new challenges, launch new businesses and forge new connections within the Python community. PyCon Australia provides attendees with the opportunity to delve into the dynamic programming language relied upon by institutions from MIT and NASA to Cisco and Walt Disney. PyCon helps people learn new tools and techniques, present their own projects, and meet other Python fans. Press passes to the conference are available for members of the press who would like to witness PyCon in person.
